Minorities are eliminating socioeconomics disparities rather than reinforcing it by implementing new technology, (Laudon & Laudon, 2013). The cost of technology has decreased over time because of all the advancement making it easier for minorities to get access to new technology. Computers and Smartphones are more economically efficient and affordable, compared to the prices several years ago
2. Why is access to technology insufficient to eliminate the digital divide?
Technology has been around for quite some time, which means that individuals who had money were able to access it sooner than others. This means that the newest technology is better understood by those individuals, and the ones who could not afford it before but now have access are just trying to learn the newest technology. Research determined that minority children were allowed to use their technology devices for a longer period of time than Caucasian children. Parental guidance is not equal because not everyone is concerned with the amount of time spend on the devices, (Laudon & Laudon, 2013). Not all schools have the funds to have the newest technology so there is still a digital divide in education.
3. How serious a problem is the “new” digital divide? Explain your answer.
The digital divide is a very serious problem. Parents should be limiting the amount of time they allow their children to use the technology devices. Children are being less productive and are putting in too much time watching television and playing video games, (Laudon & Laudon, 2013). They have become dependent on technology and have not had a chance to learn real life skills outside of technology. It has become a health concern across the United States and has caused health program initiatives to start up in schools.
4. Why is the digital divide problem an ethical dilemma?
The digital divide is an ethical dilemma because children have access to all kinds of information, both good and bad. Without parental control, a child can search for just about anything online and usually find what they are looking for. People are becoming more tech savvy and less social outside of social media. They spend their time looking at a computer screen instead of spending time with family and friends. Physical activities have dropped tremendously due to the lack motivation, (Laudon & Laudon, 2013).
With the new innovative information systems into a business’s infrastructure does seem to have a large part in ensuring the business’s chance of success, such technologies do have a way of changing the way company’s do business and therefore should be researched well before installation and monitored throughout. The implementation of the correct information technology at the right time will ensure a company originates and remains on the road to success. The ethical issues arise when changes are perceived as an infringement on our freedom of privacy and choice. The only question is how much of our freedom are we willing to compromise to obtain advancement in our lifestyles as well as our safety.
